A big update in for the El Salvador Drink Driving Laws. It is one ALL people looking to head to the Central American country really need to be aware of,
There is now, as of January 2025, a total crack down on drink driving. It is illegal to drink drive in its totality.
This means having even just one drink and getting behind the wheel or handle bars of a vehicle is now an offence in El Salvador.
El Salvador Drink Driving Laws are now zero-tolerance for drunk driving, prohibiting any detectable amount of alcohol in a driver's system. This strict measure aims to enhance road safety and has already led to a reduction in traffic incidents.
In 2024, the country achieved a historic reduction in violent crimes, with a more than 40% decrease in offenses such as robbery, theft, and extortion.
The government plans to further strengthen the National Civil Police and justice system in 2025 by investing in vehicle acquisition, institutional modernisation, and improvements to justice infrastructure.
These initiatives reflect a commitment to creating a safer environment for both residents and visitors. Travellers are advised to be aware of the stringent DUI laws and to stay informed about local regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in El Salvador.
