Cairns

Cairns (Great Barrier Reef Gateway)

Lets be honest here, you cannot go to Australia and not go to the Great Barrier Reef, especially as a backpacker, you have time and everything you need with you so jumping on a bus from Brisbane to head up the coast is a no brainer. There are two options, head all the way up to Cairns, around 9 hours, or break the trip up. If you opt to break it up the Airlie Beach will offer laid back vibes for a stop, Magnetic Island is also a fantastic option and accessible from Townsville.

Magnetic Island

Catching a ferry across from Townsville to Magnetic Island ($36 return) will land you at Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal. From here you can walk to Nomads or catch a bus from the ferry teminal to Horse shoe bay where you will find the Selina (We are recommending hostels due to costs and these two are going to be the best options). Magnetic Island has tropical landscapes, dense forests, rocky hills, and stunning beaches. It is two thirds protected National Park, has 23 beautiful bays and beaches and most importantly is home to Northern Australia’s largest colony of Koalas living in the wild. Its a fantastic island for hiking and beaches. Have 3 days, if you want longer then stay, if not then back to Nellys Terminal to continue your trip up or down the mainland coast.
