Did you know the U.S. Capitol Building is one of the most iconic landmarks in America? Located in Washington, D.C., it’s been the home of Congress since 1800.

Construction began in 1793, and the original building was completed in 1800; but it didn’t look like the Capitol we know today. The iconic dome … That wasn’t added until the 1860s during the Civil War!

The Capitol was burned by British troops during the War of 1812 but was rebuilt and expanded afterward. Today, it stands as a symbol of democracy and the enduring strength of the nation.

Every building on our planet tells a story, and everyone person has a story to tell that is attached to a place. We often say ‘it’s just bricks and mortar,’ but our human connection can run deep. Our childhood homes, our schools, they hold memories that are tied to the ‘bricks and mortar’. Architecture can also be a viewport to history, a glimpse of possibility. It can highlight injustice or ooze power. It’s a subject that is truly fascinating. The goal of Backpackers Blueprint was to discover and tell these stories.

This year we will be reaching deep in an attempt to share and discover our human connection with the built world. It is an idea I have had since falling out of love with the industry of architecture but not the subject. It’s an exciting journey that I am praying people will get value from and be able to use through an arsenal of travel tools that are being created in the background.

Guatapé is a picturesque town in Antioquia, Colombia, known for its brightly coloured buildings and rich cultural history.

Founded in 1811, Guatapé was originally home to the indigenous Tahamí people, who lived off the land and nearby rivers.

In the mid-20th century, Guatapé underwent a transformation when the nearby Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir was built to supply hydroelectric power. This turned the area into a popular tourist destination due to its striking lakes and landscapes.

The zócalos, or stucco bas-reliefs, are a defining feature of Guatapé’s architecture. These vibrant designs line the lower portions of nearly every building in town.

Each zócalo tells a story, often reflecting the family, business, or cultural history of the building’s owners. Common motifs include flowers, animals, and scenes from daily life.

This tradition started as a practical way to protect walls from dirt but evolved into an artistic expression of community identity and pride.

Peterborough Cathedral 😍

Founded Originally a monastery in 655 AD, Peterborough Cathedral has a history stretching back over 1,300 years.

The current structure began in 1118 after the original abbey was destroyed by fire in 1116.

Queen Katharine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife, is buried here. Mary, Queen of Scots, was also briefly interred here before her body was moved to Westminster Abbey.

The cathedral was damaged during the English Civil War, with much of its medieval stained glass and fittings destroyed.

Today, it remains a vibrant centre of worship and a major historical attraction in Peterborough.

Queen Katharine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife, is buried here. Mary, Queen of Scots, was also briefly interred here before her body was moved to Westminster Abbey.

The cathedral was damaged during the English Civil War, with much of its medieval stained glass and fittings destroyed.

Today, it remains a vibrant centre of worship and a major historical attraction in Peterborough.

🌅 This is my happy face in Tulum. 🌅

In these moments from 2022 I look back with thanks. I can still feel the warmth of the Mexican sun on my face after what felt like a long, dark road. I did not massively enjoy my 20’s, I almost feel like I lost a decade. Of course this is not true I have a phenomenal skill set from a protracted education that will last until my time on earth is done. However whilst building these skills I had little time for myself, my nose to the grind stone in education and then in work. By the age of 30 I was tired. Something HAD to change. In this photo I am 32 and the world was opening back up after the terrible time of Covid.

Tulum was the start of a journey but it became more than a destination; it was a turning point. A place where I felt something shift, where hope and peace found me again, it was not just the place, it was the people I met who brought a joyful energy, each person excited to search and discover this little piece of Mexico. This is the moment I knew life could be different; that better days do come, that the world is not out to get you. 🌞💫

If you’re in a dark spot, hang on. Be patient, trust the journey, and know that brighter days are closer than you think. 🌴💛

🌅 This is my happy face in Tulum. 🌅
